Wartime Wedding

A Land Army girl rustles up her bridal trousseau in 1944. A marvellously nostalgic presentation about rationed fashion that commemorates the make-do-and-mend era, with many original items on show.

Gillian: This period is one of my favourites because my Mum told me so many stories about growing up in wartime when she and her sisters all sewed and knitted like demons. Wearing my 1942 replica day dress I get a nice sense of connection - which is what history is all about. The people. Lucy: The original 1940s wedding dress has had quite a history of its own. It's been altered to fit different girls - possibly making do for several weddings, at a time when not everyone could afford their own dress - but also to serve in a women's travelling theatre troupe after the war. The original headdress and veil were very kind donations from a lady who loves our work. The 1940s parachute was also donated and it has some underwear-shaped holes cut into it...!
