Fabulous Fifties
Bullet bras, sugared petticoats and Liberty bodices... A glamorous 'Cinderella' transformation set in the decade that reinvented dazzle.

Gillian: I love this talk because I get to wear such glamorous clothes... and they really make me feel like a movie star. Saying that, the girdle is by far the most uncomfortable item of corsetry I've ever had to endure. And that's including eighteenth–century shoulder–squeezers and nineteenth–century wasp waists. How my mother wore it all and did the housework is beyond me! | Lucy: Collecting original items for Fabulous Fifties has been a pleasure. We're grateful for the many donations. Stylish cuts, pretty fabrics, glittering accessories – it's all on display in this talk. For many people the fifties are living memory, not history, so audiences revel in pure nostalgia. And yes, we do have a Liberty bodice. Alas, no gym knickers. Yet. |
| "We loved the whole evening, the history, anecdotes, glamour. Your freshness, vivacity and sheer joy in presenting lifted and inspired the audience!"
